Coaching Character Course

A series of lifeskill coaching sessions that create new habits which

transform decision making and behaviour.

Shaelece Crump Gallagher has had a fair amount of obstacles to overcome in her young life, so                                    coming to Edgewater College full of attitude and on the heels on an expelled Brother, it didn’t                                        take long before this feisty yr9 found herself being referred to our Coaching Character Course                                       before heading to the Principals office and down the same track her Brother did.

“C.C.C Program helped me see the good qualities I had and the potential I ossessed… Coach’s                                     constant encouragement and guidance helped me to lay down my anger, so I could find

a way to work with my teachers for a better future”

Her turn-around was complete when Shaelece was nominated to her yr11 LEAD Program by a number of her teachers. Her confidence, focus and world view, enabled her to help the rest of the team engage at a deeper level with the program. During this program, she confirmed her passion and calling was to design and make cutting edge garments. She has always been a hard worker, which has now got purpose and direction.

Shaelece was awarded top Student for Materials and Design during 2013 and 2014, and will be going onto Unitec to pursuing her dream within the Fashion Industry.

Vili Tahitua lived in Mangere Vili and attended Edgewater College in 2005.  He was the hardcore                                   of five young restless Tongan lads who were constantly in the Principals office for fringements.

At the beginning of 2007 Coach Tu started coaching the 1st XV and all five lads tried out for the                                     team as Y11 students.  At the beginning Vili and his mate Tevita often received yellow cards.

The lure of local street gang activities on a Saturday proved too strong for Tevita.  He left the                                       team halfway through that season and dropped out of school by the end of that year.

Vili chose to stay with the program in spite of the peer pressure placed on him from the streets.  Vili went on to become a senior leader and dominant player for the 2009 1st XV.

After graduating Vili went on to the Pro-sport Auckland Rugby Academy and is now a full time professional Rugby Player (#12) for Northland.  (Tevita has just completed a 3 year jail term).

“The support and encouragement Coach Tu gave me helped me to make better decisions every day… the 7:30am breakfast and Handy Hints for Life sessions every Monday were infamous…” said Vili.

David Moeakiola lived in the harsh neighbourhood of Panama Road,  Mt Wellington when he came                             to Edgewater College. He was the leader of the famous Tongan five that joined the 1st XV in 2007.  He                           was the first graduate of our Coaching Character Course and Life SKills in Sports Program.

David was elected Deputy Head Boy in 2009 and Captain of the 1stXV which went on to win their                                   division. He was also the first graduate of the Sporting Edge LEAD Program.

In 2012 David captained the PURC Under 20’s to win the Auckland Championship and was a part of                               the 2013 Premier team that won the Auckland Premiership.

He will graduate this year with a degree in Chemistry from Auckland University.  David also helped Coach the Edgewater 5th grade to third place this year.

“Over the years’ Coach Tu has helped to inspire and guide me, to give my best and never give up… I still to this day go to the well of Handy Hints when needed… when he says for life he means it” said David.
